Getting Your Roof Replaced
back to Resources
You may need to replace your roof for various reasons such as leakage, rotted wood and many other things. Find out the extent of the damage. Have a look at your roof from the outside. See if there is any sagging and depressions, and missing shingles. Also perform an inside inspection, and look for cracks or mold smells. It's also a good idea to call a roofing professional. Emmons Construction handles Roofing Services and we provide free estimates.
You will need to do some researching first. Has anyone in the neighborhood had their roof replaced recently? You should talk to them and see which contractor they used and ask how satisfied they were (see our Testimonials page).
Not all contractors are the same, so it is advisable to get estimates before deciding which roofing company to choose. Note down any pertinent information when you speak with the roofers and ask about the roofing materials they use and the duration of the job, and any hidden charges that may apply.
What kind of roof you have, sloped, and flat, what region of the country you live in and what kinds of materials are used greatly affect costs. If you live in and area with weather extremes, severe cold, tornadoes, etc. effect costs.
You will want to consult your contractor for the best materials. You will want the longest lasting, because hopefully then you won't have to replace as often. You may find the cost may be a little higher, but you could save hundreds even thousands in the long run.
Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used material to build a roof and are cost efficient and generally guaranteed to last 20-30 years, while wood shingles can last up to 25 years but need regular maintenance. There is metal, tile, and terra cotta as well. The slate roof is the longest lasting; however, it is also the most expensive. Usually upscale homes have these sorts of roofs and depending on the quality, they can last up to 200 years.
To do things right it will take some time. Even if you require someone to come and repair a leak, then find a person that will do it right the first time. When searching for a roofer there are some things to consider. Maker sure that they are licensed and insured, and have verifiable roofing credentials (Check out Emmons Construction's valuable credential and certifications).
To find out if the company you are considering to hire to build your new roof has any complaints, check them out with the Better Business Bureau (Emmons Construction is Accredited and Rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau). A sign if a roofer is any good is how long they have been in business. The longer they have been building roofs the more experienced they will have. Check all their references and if the roofer will not give you any, then do not go with them.
